Amazon jumps ahead on tablet market, with Q3 shipment growth at over 140% - study

(Telecompaper) Apple was still the top tablet seller in the third quarter, with shipments growing 4 percent year-on-year to 10.1 million units, but Amazon leaped into second place, with shipments soaring 141 percent to 5.3 million units, from 2.2 million the year before, according to the latest study from Strategy Analytics. Samsung shipments fell in the quarter by 5 percent to 5.0 million while at Huawei, they slid 18 percent to 3.1 million. In fifth place, Lenovo posted an increase, of 8 percent to 2.5 million units. Shipments from other vendors meanwhile fell 27 percent to 12.1 million. In total, tablet in Q3 declined 4 percent to 38.2 million.

Less than half women in world use internet - ITU

Orange Romania launches 5G in three cities

(Telecompaper) Orange Romania launched Orange 5G in the capital Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Iasi. With the 5G launch, Orange Romania said its customers became the first in the Orange group to benefit from the benefits of 5G technology. The Orange 5G network offers maximum download speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps and average speeds of 600 Mbps. The operator also created the Number Share service, a first in Romania and available only to Orange customers. This service allows customers to use the same phone number on multiple devices, without requiring a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection.

Apple unveils USD 2.5 bln plan to combat affordable housing crisis in California

(Telecompaper) Apple has announced a USD 2.5 billion plan to make housing more affordable and available in California. Working with California Governor Gavin Newsom and a number of community-based organisation, Apple said it will invest in statewide housing support and help fund projects in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. The state has seen prices jump for renters and homebuyers over the past few years, leaving many people behind. Apple noted that almost 30,000 people left San Francisco between April and June of this year and that homeownership in the Bay Area was at a seven-year low. The financing plan should take two years to become fully available. Capital returned to Apple will be reinvested into future projects over the next five years.

Facebook intros new company logo to differentiate company from apps

(Telecompaper) Facebook has introduced a new company logo, with an all-caps design in a new font to set apart the company from its main social networking app. The new logo will also feature in its other apps and products, including Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus, with the addition of a more prominent 'made by Facebook' tagline. Telefonica profits fall on restructuring costs, revenue still up 1.7%

(Telecompaper) Telefonica saw its revenue growth strengthen to 1.7 percent in the third quarter to EUR 11.9 billion, thanks to improved sales in Spain and Brazil and solid growth in the UK and Germany. However, the company's net result moved to a loss of EUR 443 million, due to restructuring charges of EUR 1.88 billion, mainly in Spain.
