Freebox Delta customer base reaches 100,000 subscribers since December launch

(Telecompaper) French broadband operator Free announced that over 100,000 customers have signed up to its Freebox Delta premium bundle unveiled on 04 December. Free's co-founder Xavier Niel described the milestone as a success, while presenting an apology for the long delay in fulfilling orders during the first month following the launch.

Orange to expand FTTH offering to all French rural fibre networks

(Telecompaper) Orange will soon commercialise its FTTH broadband offers in France across all the public initiative networks (known as RIP, Reseaux d'Initiative Publique) currently being deployed by third-party operators such as Covage, Altitude and Axione. Nearly 2 million French premises were covered by these rural networks at the end of 2018, according to telecom regulator Arcep. Within this footprint, Orange's fibre offers are already available to over 500,000 households and businesses. Coverage will be extended to nearly 3 million eligible premises by the end of 2019, across public initiative networks run by third-party operators and those where Orange is responsible for the deployment.

Rakuten TV expands to over 30 new countries

(Telecompaper) Rakuten TV has expanded its VoD service to over 30 new territories, mainly in Europe. The VOD player is available online and will also feature a dedicated button on remote controls for smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Philips and Hisense from this summer.

Google releases first beta of Android Q for Pixel users

(Telecompaper) Google has released the first beta of Android Q, the next version of the mobile operating system, for users of its Pixel smartphones. The company said Android Q brings a number of additional privacy and security features for users, as well as enhancements for foldables, new APIs for connectivity, new media codecs and camera capabilities, and faster app startup. A preview SDK is also available for developers. The company will release more details of the new OS at its developers conference Google I/O in May.

Spotify files complaint against Apple with EU over app store 'tax'

(Telecompaper) Spotify has filed a complaint against Apple with the European Commission, saying the company benefits from unfair competition on its App Store as Apple favours certain apps, namely its own, over others. Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek said Apple acts as "both a player and referee" and that it purposely limits choice, to the deliberate disadvantage of other app developers.

Verizon starts pre-sales of 5G moto mod, plans USD 10 charge for unlimited 5G data

(Telecompaper) Verizon announced that it will start pre-sales of the 5G Moto Mod from 14 March. First announced last year, the mod clips on to the Moto Z3 smartphone to make it work over 5G networks. The launch comes as Verizon prepares to start 5G mobile services in the first half of 2019, with Chicago and Minneapolis announced as the first cities for the service.
