Tele2 to acquire Com Hem to form Sweden's second-largest operator

(Telecompaper) Tele2 Group and Com Hem Holding said they are merging to create Sweden's second largest mobile telephony and fixed broadband provider, as Tele2 seeks to focus on the Baltic Sea region after strategic moves elsewhere. Tele2 is absorbing the Swedish cable operator but Com Hem's CEO Anders Nilsson will take over as CEO of the enlarged Tele2 from Allison Kirkby.

Lenovo unveils standalone VR headset with Google Daydream

(Telecompaper) Lenovo has unveiled at CES a new VR headset based on Google's Daydream platform. The standalone Mirage Solo headset will launch in Q2, along with the Lenovo Mirage Camera for producing 3D videos.

T-Mobile adds 5 mln customers in 2017, DT to buy more shares

(Telecompaper) T-Mobile US said it added a net 1.9 million new customers in the fourth quarter of 2017, taking its total base to nearly 72.6 million at year-end. Over the full year, the mobile operator gained more than 5 million new customers for the fourth consecutive year. After meeting its FY guidance, the company said its majority shareholder Deutsche Telekom is considering buying more shares in the US operator.

French prosecutor orders Apple probe over planned iPhone obsolescence

(Telecompaper) The DGCCRF, France's anti-fraud and consumer protection agency, will lead a preliminary investigation over allegations that Apple misled iPhone customers and practised planned obsolescence, reports Le Monde. The probe was ordered by the Paris prosecutor examining the case recently brought to court by French association HOP, which has accused the company of intentionally shortening the lifespan of its smartphones.

Altice to spin off US company, reorganise Europe activities

(Telecompaper) Altice has announced a major reorganisation plan, saying it wants to split the company into two companies, one with its eye only on the US and the other on Europe, with the goal of simplifying the company's structure, enhancing accountability and transparency, and paying down debt. Each unit will have its own distinct targets and balance sheet strengths.
