Elliott raises potential TIM stake to 13.7%

(Telecompaper) Activist investor Elliott has increased its stake in Telecom Italia (TIM) to a potential 13.7 percent, according to a SEC filing.  Elliott and its affiliate funds hold around 8.8 percent of TIM's ordinary shares, with the investor also owning call options on 750 million ordinary shares, which is equivalent to a further 4.9 percent stake, Reuters reported. The fund has also accumulated 169.5 million saving shares in the operator in the wake of its call for six Vivendi-nominated board members, including TIM chairman and Vivendi CEO Arnaud de Puyfontaine, to be replaced at the company's 24 April AGM.

Spain ports record 912,000 lines in January

(Telecompaper) A total of 912,016 mobile and fixed line numbers were ported in Spain in January 2018, a monthly record, according to the latest figures from regulator CNMC. Some 687,974 mobile lines were ported in the first month of the year, around 24.4 percent more than in January 2017, said the regulator, with the total number of active mobile (voice, broadband and M2M) lines coming in at 52.1 million on 31 January, up 1.9 percent year on year, equivalent to a penetration rate of 112 lines per 100 inhabitants.

Telia Sweden CEO steps down

(Telecompaper) Telia Sweden said that Helene Barnekow is stepping down as executive vice president and CEO. Johan Dennelind, president & CEO of Telia Company, will temporarily assume the role of CEO of Telia Sweden until a permanent replacement has been found. Barnekow joined Telia Company in April 2014 as Head of Group Commercial, and in June 2015, she was appointed EVP and CEO of Telia Sweden.

Ukraine LTE launch attracts 1 mln users in first week

(Telecompaper) Around 1 million Ukrainian mobile subscribers used LTE services in the first week after the launch of 4G networks in the country, reports BizLigaNet citing representatives of the mobile operators Lifecell and Vodafone Ukraine. Some 600,000 subscribers of Vodafone Ukraine and 400,000 customers of Lifecell connected to LTE services.

Veon to sell Beeline Tajikistan to local shareholder

(Telecompaper) Veon Group plans to sell its subsidiary, the mobile operator Takom, working under the Beeline Tajikistan brand. Veon concluded an agreement on the sale of the Virgin Islands-based company Vimpelcom AG owning a 98 percent stake in Beeline Tajikistan, a spokesman for the company confirmed. The company Zet Mobile Limited, which already owns a 2 percent stake in Beeline Tajikistan, will acquire the rest of the shares.
