When Hurricane Sandy landed on the East Coast on October 29, 2012, more than 55,000 buildings in New York City and its surrounding regions were rendered completely uninhabitable, displacing millions of people from their homes and offices and making the metro area temporarily obsolescent. Since then, many metropolitan New York companies have used their experience of the storm to rethink the built environment. The very different lessons learned by three companies may help start a conversation on taking precautions against future disasters.
