Location ESRIN, Frascati, Italy Description Head of the lab in the Future Systems Department, Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. Duties Under the direct authority of the Head of the Future Systems Department, the Head of the lab is responsible for promoting investments in industrial innovation within the EO domain and developing partnerships with new actors entering the EO sector, including constellation operators, startups, small and medium enterprises SMEs, microcompanies, major internet and other IT companies. Heshe will foster entrepreneurial initiatives aimed at developing new business opportunities in EO and improve European economic operators competitiveness in global markets, including those for EO missions and subsystem manufacture mission operations ground segment technologies EO data access. The duties of the Head of the lab include facilitating highriskhighpotential developments, based on publicprivate partnerships PPP and other financial risk mitigation mechanisms enabling pioneers of disruptive technologies, from space and nonspace domains, to connect and interact with mainstream activities across all EOP departments to demonstrate the benefits of new technologies for the EO activities of ESA managing a cooperative framework through which these actors can work with ESA to explore the potential of these new technologies for EO, by rapidly prototyping new, disruptive concepts in an informal, multidisciplinary, collaborative environment the lab elaborating detailed proposals for applying such technologies in mainstream activities across all EOP departments conducting socioeconomic assessments to document the impact of EO at all levels of society. In performing these tasks, the Head of the lab will be supported by the team of the lab Explore Office, responsible for exploring new technologies, from space and nonspace domains, prototyping, demonstrating and adapting them for use in EO missions, systems, products, applications and services, and the team of the lab Invest Office, responsible for activities to foster investment in industrial innovation within the EO domain. Technical competencies Knowledge of scientific discipline, including strategic vision of the area of Earth Observation Computer systems engineering Experience in remote sensing retrieval techniques Experience in the development of EO applications Knowledge in EO Big Data and digital services Knowledge of innovationrelated processes Knowledge of international scientific community Understanding of space system architectures Leadership competencies Developing motivating people Strategic vision business context Acting as a role model Behavioural competencies Relationship Management Ambassadorship Innovation Creativity Responsible DecisionMaking Teamwork Problem Solving Education Applicants for this post should have a PhD or as a minimum a Masters degree, or equivalent qualifications, in engineering, physics or mathematics. Additional informations This post is opened at A2A4 grade with a potential regrading to A5 in 12 months, dependent on the incumbent achieving a successful evolution of the post according to current plans and delivering successful performance. Experience in an international environment i.e. outside the candidates home country and in diverse functional areas relevant to the activities of ESA are considered an asset for the post.
