Industry generally relies on noble metals such as palladium or platinum, which are expensive and can pose environmental and product-purification issues, to catalyze hydrogenations. Iron also can catalyze such reactions and would be far cheaper and less toxic (see: "Better Hydrogenation Catalysts Beckon").
