In North America, Toyota unit sales rose 12 percent from the year-earlier quarter to 685,000 units, outpacing the U.S. industrywide light-vehicle gain of 8 percent. TOKYO -- Surging sales in North America and favorable exchange rates drove Toyota Motor Corp. to double-digit profit gains in the latest quarter, despite slumping volume in all other major markets.
