Antarctic glacier shrank quickly in the past
2014-02-21 08:26:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Ars Technica: We recently covered some research on Greenlands Jakobshavn Ice Stream, the worlds fastest glacier. While nothing on Antarctica can match that speed, the continent has ice streams of its own. Many have been shrinking, too--retreating and thinning as melting at the coast pulls continental ice out to die in the sea. Of particular note is the Pine Island Glacier (PIG, for short). This massive glacier flows into the Amundsen Sea, and was the source of the 35km wide iceberg that made news last November....

Greenland glacier hits record speed
2014-02-06 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BBC: A river of ice in Greenland has become the fastest-flowing glacier currently known in the world, a study suggests. In summer, the Jakobshavn Glacier - widely thought to have spawned the iceberg that sank the Titanic - is moving about four times faster than it was in the 1990s. The Greenland Ice Sheet has seen record melting in recent years and would raise sea levels 6m were it all to vanish. Details of the research are published in The Cryosphere journal. Ian Joughin and Ben Smith of...

Greenland Glacier Races to Ocean at Record Speed
2014-02-04 22:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
National Geographic: A Greenland glacier named Jakobshavn Isbrae, which many believe spawned the iceberg that sank the Titanic, has hit record speeds in its race to the ocean. Some may be tempted to call it the king of the glacier world, but this speedy river of ice is nothing to crow about. A new study published February 3 in the journal Cryosphere finds that Jakobshavn's averaged annual speed in 2012 and 2013 was nearly three times its rate in the 1990s. Its flow rate during the summer months was even faster. "We...

Manhattan-Sized Ice Chunk Breaks Off Glacier, Sends Message to Climate Change Skeptics
2014-02-03 23:25:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Weather Channel: When the documentary Chasing Ice came out in 2012, it included footage of the largest glacier calving event ever caught on film. Two years later, the filmmakers hope to use that monumental capture as visual proof of climate change. In March they begin a several-month tour, stopping in the Congressional districts of climate-change denying legislators. The idea is to shift the debate back from politics to science, to determine what happens when people can actually see rather than just hear about...

Greenland's Jakobshavn Glacier is Moving 10 Miles Per Year, Recording-Breaking Speed
2014-02-03 20:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Nature World: The massive Arctic glacier believed to be responsible for calving the iceberg that sunk the Titanic is moving from the Greenland ice sheet and into the ocean at record speeds, according to a study in the journal The Cryosphere. Jakobshavn Glacier is moving at a speed that appears the be the fastest ever recorded, researchers from the University of Washington and the German Space Agency (DLR) report. "We are now seeing summer speeds more than four times what they were in the 1990s on a glacier...
