01.13: A List of Things That Didn't Kill Me

2014-12-18 20:04:24| Powells Books Events Calendar

How does a good kid overcome a bad childhood? Jason Schmidt's searing debut memoir explores that question with unflinching clarity and wit, in the tradition of Jeannette Walls's The Glass Castle. Schmidt wasn't surprised when he came home one day during his junior year of high school and found his father, Mark, crawling around in a giant pool of blood. Things like that had been happening a lot since Mark had been diagnosed with HIV three years earlier. Jason's life with Mark was full of secrets — about drugs, crime, and sex. If the straights — people with normal lives — ever found out any of those secrets, the police would come and Jason's home would be torn apart. So the rule, since Jason had been in preschool, was never to tell the straights anything. A List of Things That Didn't Kill Me (Farrar Straus Giroux) is a funny, disturbing memoir full of brutal insights and unexpected wit that explores the question: How do you find your moral center in a world that doesn't seem to have one?

An influential advisory group this morning recommended that the National Institutes of Health cancel the National Children's Study , a controversial and long-delayed plan to follow the health of 100,000 U.S. children from birth to age 21. In a report released this morning at a meeting at NIH, a working group created by the NIH director's advisory committee concluded that "while the overall goals and intent [of the NCS] are meritorious and should be a priority for future scientific support, the NCS, as currently outlined, is not feasible." NIH Director Francis Collins has yet to respond to the recommendation, according to Science Insider's Jocelyn Kaiser, who is at the meeting.

BPG: A new, superior image format that really ought to kill off JPEG

2014-12-12 16:16:58| Extremetech

For all of the massive technological advances that we've seen over the last few years, there are still a number of dinosaurs from a bygone era that -- rather unfortunately -- just won't die. JPEG is one of the most prominent examples: It was created more than 20 years ago, and yet its antiquated, bloated, blocky algorithm still dominates the web. Now, however, there's a replacement in town -- it's called BPG, and it's awesome.
