The EPA’s Food Recovery Hierarchy in priority order includes, Source Reduction, Feed Hungry People, Feed Animals, Industrial Uses, Composting and, as a last resort, Incineration or Landfill. Reuse of food for human consumption is clearly a higher and better use than composting or other activities. Food reuse, however, creates a number of issues and challenges that need to be addressed.
