A University of Florida plant scientist whose ties to Monsanto have been scrutinized by activists tried to give back a $25,000 grant from the agribusiness, but has instead donated it to a food pantry. The professor, Kevin Folta , was among researchers whose emails were obtained through freedom-of-information laws by activists with U.S. Right to Know, a group that, among other things, advocates for labels on foods containing genetically modified organisms.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has positively identified the presence of more than 40 Oriental fruit flies, Bactrocera dorsalis , in south Miami-Dade County. The initial fly was discovered during routine trapping, and additional flies were discovered during expanded trapping activities.

Florida-based NextEra Energy is looking to get into the solar power business in North Carolina with its proposed purchase of the five solar farms, totaling 22 megawatts of capacity, developed by Holocene Clean Energy of Raleigh.
