Sonoco has been fined $230,000 for violation of the SC Solid Waste Policy and Management Act related to an unpermitted landfill, according to Jim Beasley with the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control Media Relations. Beasley said since 1965 Sonoco has operated an ash staging area in Hartsville for recycling and beneficial reuse, but after the recycling markets diminished, Sonoco continued to place ash in a 14 acre staging area.

Liberty Media reports operating profit decline

Liberty Media Corp. said operating profit in its latest quarter fell as a legal settlement offset strength in SiriusXM Holdings Inc., in which Liberty owns a majority stake. SiriusXM had an "outstanding" quarter, according to Liberty, with subscribers growing 46 percent to 692,000.
