Drop in copper prices doesn't hurt fourth quarter for Mueller

The continued decline in the price of copper didn't slow down sales or income for Mueller Industries Inc. in the fourth quarter of 2014. The Memphis-based company reported net income of $18 million or 32 cents per diluted share in the fourth quarter, compared to $15.4 million or 27 cents in the fourth quarter of 2013.

U.S. EPA, the automotive industry, and states signed agreement to reduce use of copper and other materials in motor vehicle brake pads. Copper-Free Brake Initiative calls for cutting copper in brake pads to less than 5% by 2021 and 0.5% by 2025. Voluntary initiative also calls for cutting amount of mercury, lead, cadmium, asbestiform fibers, and chromium-6 salts in brake pads. These steps will decrease runoff of these materials from roads into nation’s streams, rivers and lakes.

Verizon offers $10K reward to apprehend Southern Cal. copper thieves

Verizon continues to be a victim of copper theft, suffering over 12 incidents in its Southern California market alone in recent months. Like it has done in other markets, the service provider is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that will help the local authorities arrest and prosecute whoever was responsible for the latest spate of vandalism on its network.
