A new low-power, long-range version of Wi-Fi that bolsters Internet of Things connections will be dubbed Wi-Fi HaLow, the Wi-Fi Alliance revealed today in advance of CES. Wi-Fi HaLow is based on the pending IEEE 802.11ah specification.

FCC: U.S. Internet connection speeds have at least tripled since 2011

The Federal Communications Commission has said this week that the average download speed for U.S. Internet connections has surged to 31 Mbps as of September 2014, up from 10 Mbps in March 2011. Consumers have demanded faster speeds and more bandwidth as streaming services are now the norm and the size of downloadable files have increased over time.

Santa Fe's downtown Main Library, which in recent years has increasingly served as a public Internet hub, will close for more than two weeks starting Jan. 1 while it undergoes a rewiring project to improve Wi-Fi service and connectivity. The $45,000 undertaking will include the addition of new lines that will allow the library to increase the number of workstations for public use, library Director Pat Hodapp said.
