Altice, HP Labs spin-off Leia to develop holographic phone

(Telecompaper) Altice has allied with Holographic systems specialist Leia to make its mark as an innovative, customer-focused group. The startup formed in 2014 was formed by David Fattal, Zhen Peng and Pierre-Emmanuel Evreux as a technology spin-off from Hewlett-Packard laboratories. According to the partners, this strategic initiative combines Leia's Holographic Reality technology platform and Altice's content and media ecosystem to provide Altice customers with "an entirely new digital experience via the sharing of 3D selfies, holographic video communication, interactive games and a host of other special apps." Altice, whose R&D base Altice Labs, is in Portugal, intends to roll out the future product in its current markets of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Israel and the Dominican Republic.

Microsoft sells feature phone business to Foxconn

(Telecompaper) Microsoft has agreed to sell its feature phone business to FIH Mobile, the contract manufacturer owned by Hon Hai/Foxconn Technology Group, and Finnish company HMD Global for USD 350 million. As part of the deal, FIH Mobile will also acquire Microsoft Mobile Vietnam, the company's factory in Hanoi, Vietnam, and take over 4,500 employees. Microsoft said it will remain present in the smartphone market, selling its own Lumia devices and licensing Windows 10 Mobile to other manufacturers. As part of the deal, Microsoft will transfer substantially all of its feature phone assets, including brands, software and services, care network and other assets, customer contracts, and critical supply agreements. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2016, subject to regulatory approvals.
