NASAs Space Launch System is officially all systems go for Mars and Moon landings
2014-08-28 20:51:32| Extremetech
NASA's Space Launch System, the USA's first exploration-class spacecraft since the Space Shuttle, has officially passed the whiteboard formulation stage and moved into full-scale development. The SLS, which will be the most powerful rocket ever built, will allow NASA to land astronauts on Mars and captured asteroids, and perhaps other planets and moons throughout the Solar System as well.

NASAs electric vertical-takeoff airplane takes first flight, aims to eventually replace the helicopter
2014-08-20 17:36:00| Extremetech
It might look like some kind of crazy machination that adorned the cover of Popular Aviation back in the '60s, the flying machine pictured above is the real deal. Developed by NASA, GL-10 Greased Lightning is an unmanned hybrid-electric aircraft that can swivel its wings and engines -- into the vertical position for vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), and then horizontal for conventional flight. The fairly recent advent of electric propulsion -- thanks in large to the growing power and energy density of batteries -- allows for some very efficient hybrid-electric aircraft designs that could finally replace the current (massively inefficient) king of VTOL: the helicopter.

Watch the test flight of NASAs supersonic Mars-bound flying saucer in beautiful HD
2014-08-11 16:15:15| Extremetech
After a number of false starts and launch delays, NASA has finally released HD footage of its flying saucer's inaugural test flight over Hawaii. The flying saucer, or Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) to give its full name, is one of the possible technologies that NASA is investigating for safely landing large spacecraft on the surface of Mars and other planets in the not-so-distant future. Unsurprisingly the first test of the flying saucer didn't quite go to plan -- but overall NASA is very pleased with the results.

NASAs Mars 2020 rover will hunt for signs of alien life, produce oxygen from Mars atmosphere
2014-08-01 13:48:42| Extremetech
NASA has announced that the next Mars rover -- currently codenamed Mars 2020 -- will be outfitted with an array of sophisticated, upgraded scientific instruments that will let it delve deeper and farther than Curiosity, with the hope that it will be able to uncover signs of life on Mars. Perhaps even more excitingly, Mars 2020 will also be equipped with a new instrument that can convert the carbon dioxide in Mars' atmosphere into oxygen -- this is of utmost importance if humanity ever colonizes Mars -- and another instrument that will gather and store Martian rock samples for eventual return to Earth.
