REUTERS: The battered energy sector may begin to brighten a little as companies report second-quarter results, but barring a big increase in the price of oil, the sector won't be able to sustain even current share prices going forward, analysts and investors say. Oil prices have fallen at a much steeper clip than energy shares in the 13 months since June 23, 2014 - when oil prices hit a nine-month peak - keeping valuations high even as share prices have plunged.

Juniper Networks projected third-quarter results that may top analysts' estimates and reiterated its forecast for improved spending on networking equipment in the second half, sending shares higher in late trading. Juniper predicted third-quarter sales of $1.23 billion, with profit excluding some items of 50 cents to 54 cents a share.

Global crude oil prices have halved in the past year, narrowing the price difference between crude oil-derived naphtha and natural gas-based ethane cracking, which erased the competitive advantage U.S. chemical firms had over their European rivals.
