Treasury stabilising SAA

South Africa's National Treasury has been working with the embattled national airline to ensure it has enough cash to meet its obligations. South African Airways faced a cash crunch earlier this month when it emerged that US banking group Citigroup cancelled a R250 million banking facility for the airline in December.

It is no longer tenable for the people of South Africa to continue to fund South African Airways and SAA board chairwoman Dudu Miyeni's perpetual mismanagement, the Democratic Alliance said on Sunday. A report in Sunday's City Press newspaper, which revealed SAA's annual financial losses had increased from R2.5 billion to R4.7 billion compared to the previous financial year, reaffirmed the DA's call for Miyeni to be fired and for the "money-sucking" state-owned airline to be privatised, DA spokeswoman Natasha Mazzone said.

SAA is in a death spiral and will crash and burn if its incompetant leaders are not removed, writes William Saunderson-Meyer. One doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that South African Airways is in a financial death spiral and that unless the heavy hand of incompetence - that of board chair Dudu Myeni - is removed from the rudder, it may crash and burn.

SAA movements concern Nene

Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene is "concerned" that senior management changes at South African Airways are hampering the carrier's efforts to become financially stable and has asked for a briefing from the state-owned company's board. SAA, which is unprofitable and relying on government guaranteed loans, last week appointed Musa Zwane as its seventh acting or permanent chief executive officer in less than four years.
