Verge: The Obama administration yesterday proposed the first-ever federal regulations for oil and gas drilling in the Arctic Ocean, The Wall Street Journal reports. The rules would require companies to create contingency plans in the event of a spill or rig malfunction. AIA supports FAA's proposed UAS regulations.

According to AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey, FAA has taken an important step towards integration of UAS into civil airspace by issuing draft regulations for use of small unmanned aircraft systems. Issuance of these proposed regulations is a key element of government and industry efforts to foster safe operations in both civil and military applications of remotely piloted aircraft while further encouraging research and development of UAS technologies.

FAA Regulations will facilitate integration of small UAS.

FAA proposed framework of regulations that would allow routine use of certain small unmanned aircraft systems in today's aviation system. FAA proposal offers safety rules for small UAS (under 55 lb) conducting non-recreational operations. Rules would limit flights to daylight and visual-line-of-sight operations. They also address height restrictions, operator certification, optional use of visual observer, aircraft registration and marking, and operational limits.
