PG&E has asked a federal judge to dismiss seven of the 28 counts that government prosecutors filed against the utility for its role in causing a fatal explosion of natural gas in San Bruno, and the court in the case says it will consider PG&E's request. Separately, San Francisco-based PG&E announced on Tuesday a sale of its stock to help pay for penalties imposed on it by state regulators.
CP officially asks to appeal $430-million Lac-Megantic settlement fund for victims

Canadian Pacific Railway is officially asking for permission to appeal the approval of the $430-million settlement fund for victims and creditors of the Lac-Megantic train derailment. The company states in court documents obtained by The Canadian Press today that the fund is unfair and that the Superior Court justice who gave it the green light earlier this month had no jurisdiction to do so.

SC asks feds to evaluate response to E. coli outbreak

South Carolina's public health department has asked federal officials to evaluate both the agency's response to an E. coli outbreak that killed one child at a Greenwood day care facility and its infectious disease programs overall. Department of Health and Environmental Control director Catherine Heigel said Friday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has agreed to review how it handled the outbreak at The Learning Vine earlier this year.
