Wireless venture LightSquared, emerging from bankruptcy, asked U.S. regulators to clear the way for its renewed quest to set up a mobile broadband service covering the U.S. Regulators should transfer airwaves licenses to the entity to be known as New LightSquared, a company subsidiary said in an April 6 filing posted Tuesday on the website of the Federal Communications Commission. LightSquared last month won U.S. court permission to exit bankruptcy protection, where it has been stalled since 2012 when regulators said its wireless broadband service would interfere with GPS global-positioning navigation technology.

The United States has officially asked Swedish authorities to freeze more than $30 million in assets tied to investigations into possible bribery and money laundering involving Uzbek officials. In a letter obtaned by RFE/RL from a Swedish investigative journalist, the U.S. Department of Justice wrote that U.S. investigations had revealed that the Russian-Norwegian company VimpelCom, Russian-owned MTS, and Swedish-Finnish company TeliaSonera had "paid bribes to Uzbek officials to obtain mobile telecommunications business in Uzbekistan."

Exxon unit asks for exception to North Dakota gas flare rule

A subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corp. is asking state regulators to grant an exception to the amount of natural gas companies are permitted to burn off at 140 of its oil wells in Dunn and McKenzie counties. The state's Oil and Gas Division heard the request from XTO Energy this week in which the company argues it has nowhere to take its gas.
