Fridays walk home from school was a celebratory occasion for North Portland school children who joined with City officials to parade along a new paved path from Sitton Elementary School through Pier Park to a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Commissioner Amanda Fritz.

Corning Inc. asks for voluntary layoffs at Canton plant

Corning Inc. is asking 10 percent of its hourly union workers to take temporary layoffs this fall because demand has slowed for some products made at the Canton plant. A notice posted at the plant Tuesday came less than three weeks after the company broke ground on a $21 million expansion project that is supposed to create 40 permanent jobs.
