Smartwatch shipments jump 56% to record 18 mln units in Q4

(Telecompaper) Global smartwatch shipments reached a record 18 million units in the fourth quarter, a jump of 56 percent from the year before, according to the latest study from Strategy Analytics. Apple kept its top place with a share of over half of the market, while Samsung moved to second place, overtaking Fitbit and Garmin. For the year, shipments also hit all time high levels of 45 million units.
Veon revises Ericsson contract, to receive USD 350 mln

(Telecompaper) Veon has revised its contract with Ericsson to upgrade its core IT systems in several countries in the coming years and to release Ericsson from the development and delivery of the Full Stack Revenue Manager Solution. Veon and Ericsson have signed binding terms to vary the existing agreements, and as a result, Veon said it will receive USD 350 million during the first half of this year.

Casa Systems buys NetComm for AUD 161 mln

The acquisition will also diversify Casa Systems revenues both geographically and by product channel. It will expand Casa Systems' customer reach with several new Tier 1 global communications services provider customers and adds fixed wireless products to the company's portfolio, enabling it to address the large 5G fixed wireless access market.
Telefonica sells Guatemala, El Salvador units to America Movil for EUR 570 mln

(Telecompaper) America Movil has announced a deal to acquire Guatemala and El Salvador operations from Telefonica for a total of EUR 570 million. In a short statement, the Mexican telecommunications giant said it paid EUR 293 million for 100 percent of Telefonica's Guatemalan assets and EUR 277 million for 99.3 percent of Telefonica El Salvador. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval for the El Salvador deal. It added that the acquisitions will boost its position in Central America, where it plans to provide next-generation services including 5G.
