Xiaomi to pass FY target in October with over 100 mln smartphones shipped

Italy fines Apple and Samsung EUR 15 mln over 'planned obsolescence'

(Telecompaper) The practice breached articles 20, 21, 22 and 24 of Italy's Consumer Code in that the companies failed to inform consumers of the serious malfunctions that the new firmware could cause due to the greater stress placed on the device's hardware and the high repair cost of out-of-warranty repairs connected to such malfunctions, added the regulator.

Netflix beats Q3 expectations with over 6 mln new paid subscribers

(Telecompaper) Netflix reported third-quarter results above expectations. The company added a total of 6.07 million new subscribers in the quarter, including 1.00 million in the US, for a total of 130 million worldwide. The results sent the company's share price up 13 percent in after-hours trading.

Truphone raises further GBP 18 mln, valued at GBP 386 mln

(Telecompaper) UK-based eSIM and IoT technology provider Truphone announced that it has raised a further GBP 18 million in unconditional funding through a successful rights issue valuing the company at GBP 386 million. In a statement it added that a further GBP 36 million has been secured based on the same valuation on a conditional basis. The company said it will use the new funds to deliver its technology to customers at a faster rate, after signing a number of high-value deals.

Facebook breach hits at least 50 mln accounts

(Telecompaper) Facebook said the data of at least 50 million accounts has been breached. The company has alerted law enforcement and fixed the flaw, a vulnerability in the code related to its "View As" feature. Facebook also reset the access tokens of the almost 50 million accounts it knows were affected, plus of another 40 million accounts that were subject the vulnerability last year. This means a total 90 million people will have to log back in to the Facebook or any of their apps that use Facebook login, though they will not have to change their passwords, the company said Facebook added that it will reset the access tokens of any more accounts it finds were affected by the vulnerability, implying there could be more.
