(Telecompaper) AT&T has launched an initial public offering of a stake in Vrio Corp, the holding company for its satellite television service DirecTV Latin America. In a statement, the company said it expects the IPO of 29.7 million class A Vrio shares to raise up to USD 653 million, with the price expected at USD 19 to USD 22 per share.

Spain to bring fibre to all by 2021 in EUR 525 mln investment

(Telecompaper) Spain's President Mariano Rajoy has announced a new project, dubbed "Plan 300x100", to bring fibre-optic broadband access to all localities and 95 percent of the population by 2021 in a total investment of EUR 525 million. Although significant private investment from Telefonica, Vodafone, Orange and Masmovil has helped Spain create Europe's largest fibre to the home (FTTH) network, already covering 76 percent of the country's population (more than Germany, the UK and Italy combined), the government has now committed to bringing fast broadband to all underserved areas as well as 300Mbps fibre to all population centres over the next 4 years.

Canada to create 5G corridor with CAD 400 mln from govt, tech firms

(Telecompaper) Canada wants to create a 5G corridor and will be investing over CAD 400 mln into the project, and into 5G research in general, CBCNews reported. The first CAD 200 million, for research, will come from the federal government, as well as from the governments of Ontario and Quebec. Another CAD 200 million will come from companies such as Ericsson, Ciena Canada, Thales Canada, IBM and CGI. This money will go to getting the corridor, and its facilities, up and running.
