(Telecompaper) Google CEO Sundar Pichai has been awarded restricted stock worth USD 199 million from parent company Alphabet, Bloomberg reported. Pichai received 273,328 Class C shares on 3 February that will vest in quarterly increments through 2019 if he remains on the job, according to a company filing.
Millicom to sell DR Congo business to Orange for USD 160 mln

(Telecompaper) Millicom has signed an agreement for the sale of its Tigo business in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Orange. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals. In a statement, Millicom said it will sell 100 percent of the share capital in the holding company Oasis for a total cash consideration of USD 160 million. Mauricio Ramos, CEO of Millicom said the sale of Tigo DRC is in line with the group's strategy of supporting consolidation and concentrating resources in its most promising markets. Millicom said it will use the proceeds from the sale to strengthen its balance sheet allowing the company to reinvest in its existing Latin American and African markets, improving earnings and cash flow and reducing leverage.

Symantec welcomes USD 500 mln, board member from Silver Lake

(Telecompaper) Symantec has received a USD 500 million investment from Silver Lake, with Ken Hao, a managing partner at the private equity firm, taking a seat on the company's board, the Wall Street Journal reported. With the money, Symantec will buy back more shares, cut costs and push forward on a transformation plan it launched in 2014. It also plans to return USD 5.5 billion in capital to shareholders in the coming year, also using proceeds from the recent sale of its Veritas data-storage and recovery business. Activist hedge fund Elliott Management has aso been amassing a large stake in Symantec, becoming one of its largest shareholders, according to people familiar with the matter.

Australia raises AUD 544 mln in 1,800 MHz band auction

(Telecompaper) Optus, Telstra, TPG and Vodafone all secured spectrum in Australia's 1,800 MHz band auction, resulting in total proceeds of AUD 543.5 million, the Australian Communications and Media Authority announced. Optus will pay the most, at AUD 196 million, Testra AUS 191 million, TPG Internet AUD 88 million and Vodafone AUD 68 million. The auction of regional lots of 2x5MHz started in November last year and ran for 29 working days. The new frequencies are expected to help the operators strengthen 4G coverage throughout the country. The 1,800 MHz band is already used extensively in major cities. The technology-neutral licences are valid until June 2028.

Feb 4 This week's roller-coaster ride in the global crude oil market was likely fueled in part by the sudden liquidation of a $600 million leveraged fund bet on falling prices, market sources said on Wednesday. Unknown investors in the VelocityShares 3x Inverse Crude Oil Exchange Traded Note - which offers the ability to make a bearish bet on prices magnified threefold, with gut-churning ups and downs - bailed out early this week after jumping into the fund in January, ETN data show.
