Feb 2 Communication equipment maker TE Connectivity Ltd said it would buy Ireland-based medical device maker Creganna Medical group for $895 million in cash. Creganna Medical Group, which is owned by Permira Funds, makes medical equipment and devices that are used in minimally invasive procedures.

Sony to buy Altair Semiconductor for USD 212 mln

(Telecompaper) Sony has agreed to buy Altair Semiconductor for USD 212 million, expanding in the LTE chip market. Based in Israel, Altair owns modem chip technology and related software for LTE. Its modem chips stand out for their low power consumption, high performance and competitive cost, Sony said. In addition to strengthening Sony's mobile phone business, the acquisition is expected to help Sony develop in the Internet of Things market. Sony expects to close the acquisition in early February.

FreedomPop raises USD 50 mln, launches global hotspot

(Telecompaper) MVNO FreedomPop said it's raised another USD 50 million in financing, bringing its total funding to over USD 109 million. The new funding will be used to accelerate its international expansion in markets in Europe, Asia and South America, including the launch of its new Global hotspot and SIM. Started in the US, FreedomPop launched in its first foreign market last year, the UK, and claims over 1 million customers. The Global hotspot is available to US and UK users roaming in 25 countries across Europe. It comes with 200 MB per month of free data roaming in the countries, and users can buy additional data at a cost of USD 10 for 500 MB. FreedomPop plans to expand coverage to over 40 countries by year-end, including parts of Asia and Latin America. The Global hotspot is available for a special launch price of USD 49.99, and the SIM will be sold for USD 10 on FreedomPop's website.

Sandberg transfers USD 31 mln in FB shares to charity

(Telecompaper) Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg has set aside USD 31 million in the company's stock for her charity fund, Re/code reports, citing an SEC filing. The document shows that Sandberg transferred 290,000 shares to the Sheryl Sandberg Philanthropy Fund on 20 November, a day on which the shares closed at USD 107. The donor-advised fund allows givers to take tax breaks and to earn profit with no capital gains tax. Sandberg is expected to promote gender equality programmes.
