Mobile payment apps reach 2 mln Dutch smartphones

(Telecompaper) Mobile payments are becoming more common in the Netherlands. Already almost one in six smartphones carries a mobile payments app, equal to around 2 million users, double the number a year ago, according to the December edition of Telecompaper's Dutch Apps Market report. The study also found that WhatsApp remains the most popular app in the country, installed on around 10.7 million smartphones.

Dutch telephony market growing, VoIP lines reach 5.5 mln

(Telecompaper) The Dutch fixed telephony market grew by 10,000 connections during the third quarter of 2015 to end September with nearly 6.3 million lines, according to Telecompaper's latest Dutch Fixed Telephony Market report. The market continues to expand thanks to growth in digital lines, which rose by 0.9 percent, helping to offset the 5.5 percent drop in PSTN/ISDN lines and 2.6 percent decrease of WLR (Wholesale Line Rental) lines. Digital telephone lines reached almost 5.5 million on 30 September, driven by 0.5 percent quarterly growth in VoIP users on DSL networks and a 5.9 percent increase in VoIP subscribers on fibre.

CityFibre to buy Kcom long-distance network for GBP 90 mln

(Telecompaper) Kcom has agreed to sell its national network infrastructure to CityFibre for GBP 90 million. The assets include 1,100 route km of metro network in 24 towns and cities, and a national long-distance network of around 1,100 route km that connects 22 towns and cities and offers connectivity into key data centres and wholesale internet peering points in London. Kcom will hold on to its local network assets in Hull and East Yorkshire and use the proceeds from the sale to reduce debt. CityFibre said it has agreed an underwritten share offering to raise GBP 80 million for the purchase. The cost of Kcom's assets is 45 percent less than building its own long-distance network, CityFibre said. CityFibre agreed to provide Kcom with access to the national network for another 15 years, at a minimum cost of GBP 5 million per year.
Harmonic offers up to USD 90 mln for Thomson Video Networks

(Telecompaper) Thomson Video Networks (TVN) has announced that it has received a binding offer for 100 percent of the company from video delivery infrastructure developer Harmonic. France-based TVN said the proposed transaction is consistent with the strategy to accelerate its development by giving the company greater global scale and resources. It added that the combination would create a clear market leader in video delivery and that the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of next year, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval. Harmonic subsequently announced that it had offered around USD 75 million in cash plus up to USD 15 million in post-closing adjustments for all of TVN.

Remotely monitored patients up 51% to 4.9 mln in 2015

(Telecompaper) The number of remotely monitored patients grew by 51 percent to 4.9 million in 2015 as the market entered a growth phase fuelled by rising market acceptance in several key verticals, according to a report by Berg Insight. This number includes all patients enrolled in m-health care programmes in which connected medical devices are used as a part of the care regimen. Connected medical devices used for various forms of personal health tracking are not included in this figure. Researchers estimate that the number of remotely monitored patients will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 48.9 percent to reach 36.1 million by 2020. The two main applications are monitoring of patients with implantable cardiac rhythm management (CRM) devices and monitoring of patients with sleep therapy devices.
