Breakthrough, Durable Stop-Start System May Be Available Soon

2013-06-24 20:45:57| AutomotiveDigest.com - Automotive Industry News

As the chart (to the right) from Johnson Controls shows, stop-start technology has taken off big time in Europe and is growing in the US and China. Automakers are pushing it forward, with other high-tech features like regenerative braking, as adding higher fuel efficiency for it internal-combustion engine vehicles. There are still some concerns about it including how long the car will be durable going through so many ignition startups. One UK-company thinks it can break through the barrier and has done a year of testing to prove it. Controlled Power Technologies says its SpeedStart belt-integrated starter-generator system for 1.2 million restarts highest so far in auto industry. EPA has been skeptical about stop-start systems when making mileage ratings. Most of the current stop-start systems built into cars on roads can typically handle between 150,000 to 300,000 stop-starts, as mandated by OEMs. Stop-starts extra longevity is due to heavier-duty components.
