Telecommunications Satellite Payload Engineer Overview The UK Space Sector is growing with a target size of 40bn by 2030. The new ESA Centre at Harwell will house 100 staff by the end of 2015, providing an exciting international environment focussed on Satellite Applications and Telecommunications. HE Space is seeking a team of 8 telecomms specialists to support the ESA programme which provides opportunities for industrial partners to gain flight testing of innovative product and service ideas. As part of this team you will be given the opportunity to work across the project lifecycle from prephase A studies through to design and development of both satellite and ground segment technologies, giving you a unique opportunity to build your experience and develop your interest in satellite telecommunications. Key Tasks and Responsibilities Evaluate the technical proposals from industrial partners to programme funding. The proposals will cover both satellite and ground segment technologies and services. Preparation of Market Analysis and studies identifying end user needs in future satcoms systems Project Management of funded projects in collaboration with the industrial partners Preparation of technical proposals in support of new satcom systems Design Authority and technical lead in the architectural definition of the end of end satcoms system including both space and ground segment. Lead system tradeoffs and studies to evaluate new concepts and technologies across satcoms systems. Support the negotiation, monitoring and control of contracts and activities related to system studies and Phases A of new telecommunication satellite projects Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering Several years of industrial experience in payload technology and products for telecommunication satellites Experience with the design, analysis, qualification, testing and implementation of satellite payload equipment for telecommunication satellites Management of development contracts for satellite payload equipment Experience in design, development andor exploitation of active RF units, such as Low noise amplifiers Channel amplifiers and linearisers Power amplifiers Frequency converters Digital signal processors Excellent organisation and communications skills and willingness to travel Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of another European language is an advantage. Satellite Payload Systems Engineer As part of the systems engineering group, the satellite payload systems engineer will work in a multidisciplinary team defining the architecture and the performance of payloads for communication satellites. The work includes proposal effort, initial design and architecture tradeoffs, detailed analysis as well as integration and test of the full up payload. Role definition Perform payload budgeting, link analysis, design review preparation, advance system studies Define specification of RF hardware Repeater and active passive units, antennas Technical monitoring of major subcontractors Receivers, LTWTAs, Multiplexers Define DC RF harness design Provide support to mechanical layout Evaluate system RF test data Produce required technical documentation reports Produce verification matrix, AIT plans, test requirements Support inorbit test activities General requirements B.Sc in electrical or telecommunication engineering and 35 years minimum experience in Communications Satellite Payloads in the satellite industry RF design background Analogue Communications System design skills including simulations Knowledge of digitals systems
