It employs some 40,000 employees generating revenues of approximately 14 billion per year. A vacancy for a Payload Design Manager mf has arisen within Airbus Defence Space in Toulouse. The successful applicant will join the SSystem Architecture Validation department. Based in Toulouse and reporting to the Head of Payload PL Design, the Payload Design Manager has a key technical role in bids, providing robust, innovative and cost effective payload designs in support of the proposal management team. Within this context, you will also be responsible for the PL design support for projects in the early custom phase post contract award ensuring continuity from bid phase to project phase. You will be required to work cooperatively with various other disciplines involved in bids and satellite design the Proposal Manager, the Satellite Customisation team, Antenna Engineering, as well as the Payload Design team in Portsmouth and the Advanced PL systems team. You will provide payload design engineering expertise on bids, either in a lead or support role, and will have the following responsibilities Analysing customer requirements Identifying the main payload design to cost tradeoffs, risks and opportunities Establishing and maintaining equipment minispecs, liaising with equipment MSCs and negotiating as required with suppliers. Being responsible for approval of final contractual specs Generating the frequency plans and the block diagrams Generating the payload analyses e.g. EIRP, GT, etc. Generating the hardware list Liaising with the technical managerinternal accommodation engineer to optimise the layout Generating the payload mission redline or statement of compliance and taking the lead in negotiations with the customer on the contractual exhibit for payload performance Answering payload questions from the customer Liaising with and coordinating support from external entities Advanced PL systems engineering group, the PL design group in Portsmouth, the Satellite Systems Group in Toulouse and the Antenna Group in Stevenage Performing lessons learned at the completion of a bid or customisation phase. Proposing evolutions to processes, best practices and methods. Pursuing and implementing them as is determined necessary Liaising and cooperating with Payload Design, Justify Design Build, Payload Validation and CM AIT as well as the Payload Product Group and MSCs to build understanding ahead of any project commitment. This role will involve business travel sometimes at short notice and as such you must be able to travel accordingly. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Engineering degree or equivalent 5 years of experience in payload design, build and test processes Knowledge of bid processes Team spirit Good communication skills to interact with Bids and Product Development teams and customers and suppliers Negotiation level of English and French. DUTIES The postholder will work in the Onboard Payload Data Processing Section and will be involved in the field of onboard payload data acquisition, handling processing. Specific duties will include supporting ESA projects from the early concept phase to launch preparation, including participating in project reviews assessing onboard data acquisition, handling processing techniques and devices for present and future ESA missions specifying, implementing and verifying digital signal processing algorithms and processing of element hardware for space science and earth observation payloads analysing and optimising highaccuracy as well as highspeed data acquisition chains defining data handling and processing system architectures including their validation in a laboratory environment participating in the standardisation of high and very highspeed onboard networks and the development of corresponding components and validation tools defining, validating and monitoring the development of customised circuits for space applications following up component technology evolution and selection of performancedriving devices participating in the definition of ESA RD programmes and acting as the technical officer responsible for the implementation of several RD activities through the placing of industrial contracts contributing to the distribution of the results of activities performed and knowledge transfer across the Agency. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for this post should have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in electrical and electronics engineering or a related field, supplemented by some years experience in the field of onboard electronics and datahandling systems. Candidates are additionally required to have practical experience of analogue and digital hardware design and development. Knowledge andor experience, as indicated, in one or more of the following areas listed in order of priority would be an asset experience of the design, simulation, manufacturing and testing of spacecraft datahandling equipment, modules, boards and components experience of instrument data acquisition and data processing chain electronics for RF and optical instruments practical experience of high and very highspeed onboard networks knowledgeexperience of the VHDL and Verilog design languages as well as FPGA and ASIC design and development for space applications knowledge of the space environment, related ECSS engineering standards and quality requirements experience of signal processing techniques for both software and hardware development. Applicants should have good interpersonal and communication skills. They should be able to work autonomously, effectively and cooperatively in a diverse and international team environment and define and implement solutions in line with team and individual objectives and project deadlines. Candidates should additionally have good analytical, organisational and reporting skills, a proactive attitude to problemsolving and an interest in innovative technologies. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these two languages is required together with a working knowledge of the other language.
