Liberty Global growth slows in Q2 after Dutch merger
2015-08-05 08:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Liberty Global added just 115,000 new revenue-generating units in the second quarter, for a total 52.9 million at the end of June, as its merger in the Netherlands led to a loss of customers there. The 87,000 RGUs lost in the Netherlands were offset by a return to growth of 92,000 in Germany, a small acquisition in Romania and improving performance in the UK. Revenue growth in the UK, Germany and Belgium also helped the cable operator achieve organic revenue growth of 3 percent year-on-year in the quarter and operating cash flow up 4 percent. Total revenues were still down slightly due to the stronger dollar, to USD 4.26 billion from USD 4.30 billion a year ago, while operating cash flow rose 2 percent to USD 2.06 billion. Liberty Global's capital expenditure increased to USD 971 million or 22.8 percent of revenue from USD 895 million or 20.8 percent in Q2 2014, driven mainly by the integration of Ziggo and UPC in the Netherlands. The company said it's taking measures to improve results in the Netherlands and expects to start benefiting from synergies there in H2 as well, leading to stronger customer, revenue and cash flow growth in the rest of the year. In addition, the company said it's finalized the 'Liberty 3.0' programme, which will lead to a new organisational structure and growth plans. Liberty said the plan should "unlock efficiencies", much of will be reinvested to drive faster revenue and operating cash flow growth in the high single digits over the medium term.

Flow of Cheap Hydroelectricity Slows in Parched West
2015-08-02 16:46:01| Energy - Topix.net
As rivers and reservoirs shrink across the parched West, cheap sources of water-generated electricity are starting to dry up. Historically low flows on the McKenzie River that snakes west of Oregon's snow-starved Cascades, for example, forced the closure of a hydroelectric generation turbine at the Trail Bridge dam in early July.
Samsung Q2 profits fall as smartphone growth slows
2015-07-30 08:49:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics reported second-quarter net profit down to KRW 5.75 trillion from KRW 6.25 trillion a year ago, hurt by weaker results in consumer electronics and mobile phones. Revenues fell to KRW 48.54 trillion from KRW 52.35 trillion a year ago, and operating profit dropped to KRW 6.90 trillion from KRW 7.19 trillion. At the mobile division, revenues of KRW 26.06 trillion were up 1 percent from the first quarter but fell compared to KRW 28.45 trillion in the year-earlier period. Operating profit at the division nearly halved year-on-year, to KRW 2.76 trillion from KRW 4.42 trillion. Samsung said the sequential improvement in results was thanks to the launch of the Galaxy S6 smartphone, which helped increase the average selling price. However, smartphone shipments were still down compared to the previous quarter, as the S6 could not offset slower sales in the low-end and mid-range markets. Samsung said it expects growth in the smartphone market to slow in the second half of the year, with only a small sequential increase in sales in Q3. It plans to focus on the high end of the market, with strategic pricing of the S6 and launching more large-screen models. This should help grow smartphone shipments from Q3 while tablet sales are expected to remain flat.
