Last week in telecoms: Digi and possibly Amazon enter the mobile arena, Tele Columbus hits new low

(Telecompaper) The Telecompaper Stock Index European Telecoms Services managed to squeeze a minimal gain of 0.1 percent out of week 22, which was relatively light on major news. The EuroStoxx 50 index was down 2.1 percent. The week's winner, Turk Telekom (+11% for the week), and a solid performance of Vodafone (+2.6%) supported our index.

Amazon interested in Sprint's Boost Mobile - report

(Telecompaper) Amazon is looking into acquiring Sprint's Boost Mobile, Reuters reported, citing sources close to the matter. Sprint has been told to sell the unit if it wants to get its merger with T-Mobile US approved. The sources said Amazon is mainly interested in the fact that any deal will allow the buyer of Boost Mobile to use the new T-Mobile new mobile network for at least six years. Amazon is also interested in linking spectrum to the deal, should it go through.

Digi Hungary launches mobile services through own network

(Telecompaper) Digi Communications' Hungarian subsidiary Digi launched mobile telephony services through its own network. The launch comes after a four-year process of investment, planning and implementation. Following the launch, the operator's services portfolio includes fixed telecommunications services (cable television, fixed internet and telephony) and mobile telecommunications services (mobile telephony and data), as well as satellite television (direct to home DTH).

Telkom Group FY operating revenue up 5.3%, active mobile subscribers grow 86%

(Telecompaper) South African operator Telkom Group reported operating revenue up by 5.3 percent to ZAR 41.8 billion for the year ended 31 March. EBITDA increased by 8.5 percent to ZAR 11.3 billion, which can be attributed to ongoing sustainable cost management. The EBITDA margin expanded by 0.8 percentage points to 27.1 percent.

Dutch mobile data usage grows 180% in 2 years

(Telecompaper) Average mobile data usage in the Netherlands has grown 180 percent in the past two years, according to research by the Telecompaper Consumer Insights Panel. Monthly usage grew to 2.8 GB per person in Q1 from around 1 GB in early 2017.
