Lawyers for Anadarko Petroleum Corp., a minority partner with BP in the ill-fated Macondo offshore well, began making their case in court Monday that Anadarko should not face steep federal Clean Water Act penalties for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The government has suggested a penalty of more $1 billion for Anadarko, and a penalty of up to $13.7 billion for BP.

When a federal judge ruled last fall on who was to blame for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, he didn't point a finger at Anadarko Petroleum Corp. But the energy company is facing a pollution penalty of as much as $3.5 billion because it owned 25% of the oil well drilled by the ill-fated rig, and would have gained a quarter of the crude it pumped if the well hadn't exploded.

BP Plc and Anadarko Petroleum Corp narrowly failed to persuade a U.S appeals court to reconsider its 2014 ruling that they could face civil fines under federal pollution laws over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. By a 7-6 vote, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals let stand a three-judge panel's decision to uphold a 2012 ruling from U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans, in which he said the companies could face Clean Water Act penalties.

EnCap Midstream, led by managing partners including William Waldrip and William Lemmons Jr. , has closed its third equity fund. Western Gas Partners LP will buy Nuevo Midstream LLC, a company backed by San Antonio-based EnCap Flatrock Midstream, for $1.5 billion in cash.
