Netflix adds almost 5 million subscribers in Q1
2015-04-16 08:40:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Netflix added 4.88 million new subscribers in the first quarter, to take its customer base to 62.27 million at the end of March. The result was better than its forecast for 4 million net customer additions. In the US, the company added 2.28 million streaming customers for a total 41.40 million, and revenues grew to USD 985 million from USD 799 million a year earlier. International customers increased by 2.60 million to 20.88 million, and revenues rose to USD 415 million from USD 267 million a year ago. The operating loss from the international activities narrowed to USD 65 million from USD 79 million in Q4, but Netflix said this will swell again to over USD 100 million in Q2 following its recent launch in Australia and New Zealand. Total operating profit for Q1 was little changed year-on-year at USD 97 million, while net income more than halved to USD 24 million, hurt by negative currency effects. Free cash flow was a negative USD 163 million as the company continues to invest in original content. For the second quarter, Netflix expects net additions in the US to slow to around 0.6 million, and its international markets to gain around 0.9 million customers. The company plans to launch in more countries later this year, starting with Japan.

Netflix leads rise in OTT video services in Netherlands
2015-04-15 09:24:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) More than one in ten (11%) Dutch households had a Netflix subscription in Q4 2014, according to the latest research from Telecompaper. This is equal to 865,000 households, and as each Netflix subscription can be used on several devices, many more total viewers for the over-the-top video service. The local streaming video services Videoland Unlimited and NLziet are less popular, with only a fraction of the subscribers of Netflix. The figures come from a survey of 6,200 Dutch consumers aged 12-80 during the fourth quarter of 2014 by the Telecompaper Consumer Panel. The survey also found that more than half the time spent watching video content was not live TV (linear broadcasting) in Q4 2014. Online video (eg YouTube) accounted for 10 percent of Dutch consumers' viewing time and downloaded or DVD content accounted for 11 percent. For younger people under 20, these percentages rise to almost 20 percent of the time. They spend less than 30 percent of their video time on watching live TV. Younger age groups also are increasingly consuming video via 'new' devices: 12-19 year olds watch on average 107 minutes a day of video content via mobile devices (smartphone, tablet and laptop).
