'Dirtbox' planes masquerade as cell towers to collect smartphone data in sophisticated spying ops
2014-11-15 06:53:39| IT Services - Topix.net
It's no secret anymore that governmental agencies in the U.S. and other countries have access to sophisticated tools that allow them to track and collect data from smartphones and other devices without users knowing anything is happening, and The Wall Street Journal has uncovered yet another such operation which uses a special "dirtbox" technology installed in special planes that can mimic cell phone towers and fool smartphones into believing they're connecting to a genuine carrier tower. In the process, the tool will collect unique identifiers about those devices, in order to track certain suspects without requiring any help from carriers.

US government uses fake cell towers, flown on airplanes, to harvest phone data and track down criminals
2014-11-14 17:34:07| Extremetech
Proving yet again that the US government can show a surprising soupçon of tenacity when it comes to invading privacy and occasionally catching a terrorist, a new report claims that the US Marshals Service -- since 2007 -- has been criss-crossing the country with small airplanes equipped with fake cell towers. These small aircraft (fixed-wing Cessnas) intercept communications between your mobile phone and the carrier's legitimate cell tower, allowing the US Marshals to find and triangulate the exact location of a target. Obviously, the primary target of the system is criminals -- but the report says a lot of "innocent Americans" are also being tagged by the program.

Verizon looking to sell mobile towers - report
2014-09-25 09:16:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Verizon is looking to sell its mobile network towers before the end of the year and has hired New York investment bank Tap Advisors to work on the sale and leasing agreement, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the situation. A sale could bring in about USD 6 billion, based on the price per tower that AT&T got in a tower deal last year. The package would involve about 12,000 towers and could be announced within 1-2 months. Verizon declined to comment. The tower company's CFO Jay Brown said earlier at an investor conference that Crown Castle told Verizon it would be interested in a deal and that the potential price of USD 6 billion was not a deterrent. Verizon has an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 towers, according to Cowen & Co, Bloomberg reported earlier.
