JOB DESCRIPTION Responsibilities Duties Tasks As member of the Data Processing Systems and Applications Group of the SEP Division, the key person will be providing engineering support to the EPSSG Ground Segment team in the frame of the EPSSG Preparatory Programme Phase B, with support expected to be extended to cover the complete development life cycle in the next phases of the Programme. In the detail, the key person will support the following tasks Support to the definition of data processing concepts and their implications on Ground Segment interfaces and architecture Analysis of requirements and constraints imposed on Ground Segment data processing elements, including their impact and criticality Specification and maintenance of Ground Segment and lower level requirements in DOORS with associated traceability and verification methods, including the development of testing concepts and test scenarios Justification of requirements to be documented in the Ground Segment Design Justification File Maintenance of the functional and architectural model of Ground Segment data processing elements with the selected Model Based System Engineering MBSE methodology Contribution to the Ground Segment preliminary design definition to be documented in the Ground Segment Architectural Design Document Contribution to the Ground Segment Integration, Verification and Validation IVV approach definition for data processing elements Specification of Interface Requirements Documents IRDs Performance of tradeoffs to assess effectiveness, risks and costs of alternative architectural and technical solutions in the area of data processing Support to the compilation and maintenance of data processing engineering budgets such as data and products volumes, products generation timeliness Support to the procurement of Ground Segment data processing elements by advising on technical solutions proposed by the contractor and by reviewing documentation to confirm its compliance with the requirements Support to testing, integration and acceptance of Ground Segment data processing elements by reviewing testing documentation, managing procurement of test data where appropriate and evaluating coherence and adequacy of integration and system level tests. In addition, the key person will also be regularly involved in the following tasks requiring interaction and coordination with other teams at System and Ground Segment level Review of System, Space Segment and Ground Segment documentation dealing with requirements, concepts, algorithms and technical analyses of relevance for data processing Review of instrument data processing algorithms and calibration concepts defined by the Space Segment with emphasis on their implications on Ground Segment data processing concepts, interfaces and architecture Participation in formal reviews and technical meetings at System and Ground Segment level. In performing these tasks the key person shall comply with the EUMETSAT organizational and divisional rules, management standards and working practices. The set of applicable rules and working practices will be made available at start of the duties in EUMETSAT. Qualifications University degree in the engineering domain or equivalent Required knowledge At least 5 years of experience in engineering of Ground Segment data processing elements for Earth Observation missions, including requirements specification, definition of interfaces, architecture and testing concepts At least 3 years of direct involvement in specification, design, development andor procurement of at least two of the following Ground Segment elements Processing infrastructure for Level 1 and Level 2 data processing Level 1 instrument data processors Frontend and L0 processing The key person shall be willing to work within a multidisciplinary and dynamic context in cooperation with other teams. The ability to maintain a system overview is essential. Heshe shall have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan hisher work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. Heshe shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation Desirable Knowledge Previous experience and knowledge in any of the following areas will be considered an additional asset Requirements management in DOORS Experience with formal system architectural modelling and design tools Knowledge of ECSS and CCSDS standards Knowledge of Calibration Validation activities for Earth Observation products Experience in specification, development andor procurement of instrument test data and processor prototypes for Earth Observation missions. We are looking to further enhance our team by Aerosol Product Development Consultancy You will be based initially for 2 years at our clients headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Extension of a further 1 year may be possible. In this large European Agency you will find an excellent and modern working environment with challenging tasks and responsibilities. Your Tasks Include This consultancy is primarily to support the development of aerosol products from instruments on the EPS Polar System series of satellites, with a particular focus on multisensor products. However evaluation and refinement of aerosol algorithms for the current MSG SEVIRI instrument is also in scope and further development and extension of algorithms for application to future satellite missions will be considered. Associated with this activity are the development of prototype software and the validation of the subsequent products, and also generation of supporting documentation such as test data descriptions, algorithm specifications and validation reports. The consultant will be fully integrated in the Atmospheric Composition Team within the Remote Sensing and Products Division but will also be expected to interface with experts within the Client as required. The tasks of the Key person will include Development of algorithms for aerosol products from instruments on the Metop series of satellites with a particular focus on multiinstrument aerosol products, drawing on the science of current established products from hyperspectral infrared and UVVisible sounders and multichannel imagers Evaluation and refinement of aerosol algorithms for the current MSG SEVIRI instrument Taking into account the constraints imposed by the final goal of implementation of the products within an operational processing system Development of prototype software code for the purposes of testing and validation the algorithms developed Generation of test data required for the verification of the algorithm and products Validation of the products produced by the prototype software code using independent data Generation of associated documentation including test data descriptions, Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents ATBD, Product User Guides, Calibration and Validation Plan, Validation reports etc Provision of support for implementation and validation of the products within the operational processing environment Interfacing with experts inside Client premises as needed Collaboration with expert groups and the wider scientific community outside Client premises as appropriate Provision of support for algorithm development and potentially prototype software development for future polar orbiting missions including next generation hyperspectral infrared and UVVisible sounders and multichannel imaging instruments with improved potential for deriving aerosol products. The tasks of the Key person will be carried out mainly at Client facilities in Darmstadt, but travel within Europe may be required for certain activities. Your Profile The key person shall have the experience and capability to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision and have good interpersonal skills. Heshe shall be familiar with satellite instrument characteristics for Earth observation, in particular for atmospheric composition, meteorology and climate monitoring. Heshe shall have the ability to write concise and comprehensive scientific and technical reports. In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Key person shall have a minimum of 5 years experience in the field of remote sensing product development including at least 2 years of aerosol product development. Specifically the key person shall have experience in aerosol optical properties retrieval from satellite data inverse modelling of atmospheric composition using vector radiative transfer models calibration and validation of satellite data products the EPS missions and instruments writing concise and comprehensive scientific and technical reports demonstrated skills in a higher programming language specification, design and coding of complex product processors testing and verification of complex data processing systems. The following areas of expertise would be an advantage familiarity with the algorithm basis for MSG SEVIRI aerosol product quality control of satellite data and products operational product processing environments software build environments and tools e.g. make, imake, eclipse, insure source code control system, e.g. Subversion or CVS. The official languages are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore key person must be able to work effectively in this language and have knowledge of the other.
