Due to continual expansion of Rocket Lab we are now seeking to appoint a Director of Vehicle Engineering. In this role you will be responsible for all aspects of output from the mechanical engineering teams that work on the Electron vehicle. This role will see the successful applicant forming a cohesive group from the three distinct vehicle areas of design, analysis and testing. Working with high level program requirements, as Director you will lead all areas of your department to ensure new RD projects and modifications to existing products are delivered on time and to the highest quality. Successful delivery of projects will be highly dependent on developing and maintaining key relationships with fellow engineering leaders for the Avionics, Software and Propulsion departments within the company. Key areas of responsibility include Vehicle Engineering Ultimate responsibility for ownership of the vehicle flight hardware Final sign off on if design, or a design repairrework operation, is safe to fly Developing processes and procedures to ensure high quality and consistent engineering output Ensuring department consistently follows company standards and processes including ECR, ECN Integrating the vehicle engineering function with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, finance, business development and information technology functions consistent with the companys objectives Ownership of the EBOM, its integrity and its maintenance Ownership for the timely delivery of acceptance test plans for production passfail criteria Leadership Providing vision, leadership, and project coordination to the Vehicle Department Workload and resource planning to ensure all highlevel requirements can be delivered within required timeframes Understanding knowledge gaps within each team to develop training targets Establishing targets for time spent on production improvements vs performance upgrades The recruitment and people development including carrying out regular performance reviews with team members Managing, mentoring and supporting the staff within the department to be motivated, effective and efficient in their roles, and provide opportunities for growth and development. Ensuring direct reports understand their role and responsibilities and receive timely feedback on their performance, both formal and informal. Providing opportunities for ongoing training to direct reports to maintain personal development objectives What you will bring to the role An aerospace, mechanical or mechatronics engineering degree or equivalent qualification 10 years engineering experience 5 years proven leadership experience with the ability to manage and motivate a team Proven experience working to deadlines in a highpressure environment Proven communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships The ability to develop and maintain relationships with a broad range of people of varying backgrounds, and to be adept at engaging with those people in a sensitive and appropriate manner Sound analytical skills able to see the big picture, make connections and appropriate decisions and judgements Readily taking ownership and action on challenges, without unnecessary planning, and being accountable for the results The ability to shape the agenda, creating new and better ways for the organization to be successful Capable of making good and timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward, by About Rocket Lab We are Rocket Lab and were opening access to space to improve life on Earth. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineering leader to manage the Vehicle Testing Team for Rocket Lab. The vehicle testing team works closely with the design and analysis teams to perform qualification tests, refine designs and ensure the Electron vehicle, mechanical components and systems meet functional requirements. On a day to day basis your team will be testing structural components including tanks, pressure systems, in addition to many other mechanical and electromechanical components. The Vehicle Testing team is critical to preserving and improving the integrity of the vehicle and its various systems, while at the same time providing sufficient resources to support ongoing development and production schedules. Key areas of responsibility include Team ManagementLeadership Effectively managing, mentoring and developing the current team of highly skilled and experienced test engineers. Test Operations Scheduling the team and ensuring all test activities meet current company deadlines and milestones Financial ManagementReporting Preparing monthly internal reports for management including performance analysis and financial reporting as required by finance in accordance to company policies Health Safety Ensuring all staff are trained in safety practices and procedures and that Rocket Labs health Safety strategy is followed at all times Minimum Requirements Aerospace, mechanical or mechatronic engineering degree or equivalent qualification 10 years testing experience 5 years team leadership and people management experience, with a proven record in being able to effectively manage a team The ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team environment Sound analytical skills and capable of seeing the big picture and making connections and appropriate decisions Heavy emphasis on achievement and details getting things done efficiently, effectively and to the highest quality standards.
