Telefonica, Mediapro reach EUR 2.4 bln football rights deal

(Telecompaper) Telefonica has reached a deal to acquire Mediapro's rights to broadcast Spain's top-tier La Liga football league and domestic cup competition (Copa del Rey) over the next three seasons, plus the UEFA Champions League and Europa League over the next two seasons, for a total of EUR 2.4 billion. In a statement to Spain's market regulator CNMV, Telefonica confirmed that its DTS unit, which had already been awarded the rights to some La Liga games in a recent auction, will now add Mediapro's BeIN Sports channel to its Movistar+ pay-TV service.

Telefonica preparing sale of Spanish towers unit - report

(Telecompaper) Telefonica is preparing to spin-off its domestic infrastructure unit for sale by mid-2016, according to an unnamed source cited by Reuters. The company is pursuing a so-called 'dual track' process that will seek to list or make a trade sale of the unit to be made up of Telefonica's 11,500 masts in Spain as well as data centres and domestic subsea cables. "The process has started, the new unit will be formally registered very shortly and Telefonica wants to move quickly on those plans," said the source, adding that the unit could be valued at EUR 5-6 billion.
