Ericsson, Telefonica, E.ON test LTE for smart meters

(Telecompaper) Ericsson, Telefonica Germany and E.ON Research Center at RWTH Aachen University have demonstrated the feasibility of using LTE networks in smart meters for the energy sector. Trials proved LTE prioritisation, a standard feature of LTE, can provide a highly reliable and flexible alternative to existing powerline or fixed network connections of smart meters, Ericsson said.

As a result, customers will gain more control over their broadband experience, including self-help tools to reduce calls to customer care and shorten resolution times. The agreement results from the strategic alliance formed by Alcatel-Lucent and Accenture in September 2014 to help communications service providers and large enterprises implement integrated ultra-broadband solutions to address the challenges of rising costs and increased data consumption caused by high demand from digital customers and applications.

Telefonica, KT, Korean govt sign innovation deal

(Telecompaper) Telefonica's Open Future innovation platform has signed a partnership agreement with Korea Telecom (KT) and state ICT centre G-CEIC to accelerate entrepreneurship and help startups expand internationally. Under the terms of the deal, the partners will work together to boost the South Korean government's programme in the Gyeonggi province, near the country's capital, Seoul. The partners said the agreement would open up new opportunities for existing Open Future and Korean startups to access new markets and services such as workspaces present in established Open Future centres and a new innovation centre created by the South Korean government and KT. The selected startups will also have access to support and incubation from the respective investment vehicles of Telefonica and the South Korean government.
