Mashable: More than 70% of the Earths surface is covered in water. About 97% of it exists in our oceans. But the oceans aren't just full of aquatic creatures and colorful coral that comprise the perfect snorkel scenery. Major problems lurk on top of, and especially beneath the surface -- problems that need our attention. That's why we need World Oceans Day. Oil and Arctic Ocean Make A Highly Troublesome Mix

Warmer Ocean Waters Will Shift Marine Habitats

2015-06-05 23:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Nature World: Warmer ocean waters are creating such a challenge for marine species worldwide, that new research shows they will consequently shift entire marine habitats. University of Washington (UW) researchers report in the journal Science that these higher temperatures will speed up the animals' metabolic need for oxygen, but the warmer water will hold less of the oxygen needed to fuel their bodies - similar to what happens at high altitudes. These changes will act together to push marine animals away...

As world warms, ocean habitats shrink

2015-06-05 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Science: Large swaths of the ocean could become inhospitable to many kinds of marine life as the world warms. Thats the conclusion of a new study, which finds that rising water temperatures will make perhaps 20% of the ocean less habitable for many fish and crabs by reducing available oxygen. Another study warns that corals fleeing the tropics for cooler waters may find themselves without enough light to photosynthesize adequately in the winter. Most kinds of coral require water that is relatively warm,...
