Job description Our customer, EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany, is an intergovernmental organization supplying climaterelated satellite data, images and products 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to national meteorological services in Europe and other users worldwide. We are seeking an experienced Data Storage Services System Software Engineer to provide support to EUMETSAT in the development and maintenance of the storage systems making up EUMETSATs Storage Network Infrastructure SNI, with special focus on archive and retrieval services. The EUMETSAT SNI provides a backbone of storage services to all EUMETSATs programs, unified under a management framework. It satisfies storage service requirements in terms of size, performance, redundancy, availability, security, supporting meteorological archive, data protection and disaster recovery. Responsibilities As a Data Storage Services System Software Engineer, your tasks will include the administration and operation of the central archive systems, maintenance of the external storage, inventory and support to the operation of the storage services. Specifically, you will be responsible for the following tasks Monitoring of the facility services, storage and archive performance, investigation into HW and SW problems and performance of the relevant corrective actions Ensuring that in case of HW or SW failures the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition, maintenance, performance of backuparchive procedures Liaison with the external providers of HW and SW maintenance for the request and follow up of maintenance interventions Analysis, planning and performance of HW and SW upgrades or reconfigurations, taking care of compatibility issues between storage subsystems Implementation and maintenance of scripts andor procedures where applicable for the automated andor controlled execution of the above activities, generation or update of associated technical documentation Provision of support to design future evolution of the facility to accommodate the requirements of current and future programs, generation and maintenance of associated documentation Always apply the relevant change management control and maintenance procedures You will be required to prepare, coordinate and communicate in advance and in detail critical activities, to be shared for review and approval prior to the actual execution of the work. This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date in September 2016. You will be nominally based at EUMETSATs facilities in Darmstadt, Germany. Working time is normal working hours, and may require standby and oncall support outside normal working hours. Support to critical operations might be required. Qualifications Competencies In addition to having a university degree or equivalent, you will have minimum of 5 years experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed storage systems. The experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterized by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and by high availability requirements. You should possess an expert knowledge and extensive work experience in the Storage solutions, Storage Area Networks SAN, Backup Archive technologies and should have demonstrated experience with the design and implementation of the following highly available system and software environments SAN topology, managing Brocade or equivalent Directors and departmental switches Storage virtualization solutions EMC VPLEX or equivalent serving many different types of storage client platforms Enterprise and Departmental storage solutions EMC VMAX, HDS or equivalent file, block or object based Big Data storage solutions Automation of storage services provision, Cloud Storage, Data Analytics Unix, Linux operating system, virtualization technologies Generation and maintenance of technical documentation in English Furthermore, it would be a distinct advantage to have experience with the following Implementation of archive solutions using Hierarchical Storage Management HSM system SAMFS or equivalent High end, automated, tape library systems StorageTek SL8500 series with ACSLS Software Implementation of backup and recovery solutionsSymantec Netbackup or equivalent SystemService Monitoring using Nagios framework The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. Client and Location For one of our main customers, EUMETSAT, we are currently looking for consultancy support for a full time Copernicus S3 ground system operations engineer position to provide consultancy in the area of System External Interfaces to support The routine operations phase of the sentinel3A satellite The operations preparation, commissioning and subsequent routine operations of sentinel3B The procurement of Sentinel3 C and D. The consultant shall be integrated into the Sentinel3 System Operations Team, within Real Time Services and System Operations Division of the Operations and User Services Department. The consultancy support will be to provide system operations engineering support, covering all spacecraft interface and flight operations aspects of the S3 Ground Segment, as well as the operational service monitoring and control. Tasks and responsibilities The consultant shall provide support to the development and operation of the Copernicus Sentinel3 Ground Segment, as well as its evolution. Main duties will include the support to System operations in a realtime operations environment Endtoend operations monitoring Operations procedure definition updates Communications systems operations Security operations Infrastructure operations and evolution Ensuring Business Continuity Multimission operations, including mass storage and archiving System Evolutions. The consultant will be responsible for the definition andor maintenance of the routine operations procedures pertaining to system operations and the interfaces of the key systems within the Sentinel3 ground segment, in accordance with the established EUMETSAT Operations Department configuration management and quality assurance practices. The consultant will acquire and maintain a Systemwide view of the Sentinel3 ground segment. In particular, the consultant will maintain operational expertise on the internal and external interfaces of the ground segment. The consultant will review any planned changes to the system configuration for the ground segments, and support the investigation of anomalies encountered through the routine system and ground segment operations. The consultant will provide support to the development and operations preparation for recurrent Sentinel3 satellites. The consultant will interface with project teams on the implementation of system upgrades to support major operations projects, including System MidTerm Evolution Plan, recurrent satellites, and any System hardware and operating system obsolescence upgrade. The consultant will perform the following routine operations tasks Definition and maintenance of system operations procedures, including System and ground segment procedures and operations guides Liaison with the spacecraft operations team to ensure the continuity and optimisation of spacecraft monitoring and control activities Liaison and coordination with the ground segment FOS and PDGS operations teams and system operations analysts to ensure the continuity and optimisation of ground segment and mission operations through procedure and operations guide updates, configuration changes, database or user interface changes, etc. Production and maintenance of operations documentation Joint Operations Rules and Procedures, Operations Interface Control Documents etc. Interface and coordination with the systems maintenance teams and industry representatives to ensure optimised performance, including participating in the definition and implementation of any changes Provision of support to operational ground segment analyses Provision of standbyoncall support as system operations engineer, on an as needed basis. This will be coordinated through the normal oncall process Provision of support, as required, to critical operations Processing and coordination of system anomalies, their documentation, investigation, classification and resolutionmitigation, including participation in Anomaly Review Boards Participation in technical meetings, formal reviews, and scheduling and planning meetings Processing and coordination of system modifications, including their documentation, approval, and implementation, including participation in Change Review Boards Support to, and participation in, the functional verification and operational validation of system upgrades and evolutions, both standalone and in the context of the overall Sentinel3 ground segment Provision of training, through written materials, practical demonstrations and presentations, to other members of the Operations Team. The tasks assigned to the consultant will be agreed through dedicated workpackages with clear identification of activities and outputs expected. In the performance of these tasks, the consultant shall apply the EUMETSAT configuration and change control procedures as well as the relevant system engineering standards, quality management procedures and maintenance procedures. Experience and education In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Consultant shall have at least 5 years of experience of spacecraft and related ground segment operations, in particular Experience of Ground Segment System Operations to support Low Earth Orbit LEO, 3Axis Stabilised Spacecraft during operation preparation, LEOP, commissioning and routine operations phases Development and maintenance of complex operational ground systems, preferably for Earth Observation spacecraft System and Interfaces Engineering AIT experience for the development of major upgrades new ground systems in a high availability 247 operational environment Satellite monitoring and control systems and nearrealtime data processing, dissemination and archive systems Operational Monitoring of near real time data flows in large computer networks Full development cycle of large systems, from the definition of requirements to system design and operations Definition and management of operational interfaces within the ground segment and with external entities Investigation into anomalies, their documentation, classification and correctionmitigation, participation in Anomaly Review Boards and, where applicable, Operations Incident investigation and review activities Familiarity with the ECSS standards Experience with development and validation of operational ground segment and associated operations procedures for nominal and contingency recovery cases Familiarity with procedure Change control and configuration management of ground segment operational systems. Furthermore, it would be a distinct advantage for the Consultant to have experience with some of the following Definition, management and traceability of complex requirements structure experience in the use of tools e.g. DOORS Definition of operations interfaces and processes with external partners Development of system analysis, reporting and monitoring tools Space Ground Interface definition Ground Stations operation and maintenance Experience with modern satellite MC systems e.g. SCOS2K control system Experience of development, maintenance and operation of medium to large size applications Experience and proven application of development using Java, Perl, Oracle, operating system scripting languages, and XML technologies Experience of modern system architectures in the area of realtime data services and file based data delivery Communications protocols e.g. TCPIP, MBSS Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems CCSDS and SAFE product formats Altimetry imaging andor sounding instrumentation for Earth Observation spacecraft Experience in development of analysis and reporting tools.
