Fires rage in Amazon Rainforest

The Ecologist: As world leaders meet in Paris to tackle carbon emissions, here in the Amazon we are watching forests burning unchecked, releasing carbon into the atmosphere, destroying sensitive ecosystems and making breathing difficult. There are forests fires in the Amazon every year, but 2015 is exceptional. We've been investigating the issue in the rainforest around Santarém, a city on the south bank of the Amazon, 800km from the sea. For the past five weeks we have woken up under a thick veil of smoke....

ASTM's Committee D09 invites anyone to join in developing new standard to help maintain integrity of cables during emergency such as a fire. Proposed standard WK52230, Test Method for Determination of Acid Gas Content of Wire and Cable Insulation or Jacket Material, will help determine halogen content of flame retardant cables. Manufacturers, insulation-materials producers, and test laboratories will use standard to ensure that insulation and cable jackets protect against corrosive damage.

Small, controlled fires are the only way to prevent large wildfires, researchers argue
2015-11-20 19:05:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mongabay: Stamping out forest fires indiscriminately leads to denser trees and debris in many forests, fueling unusually large wildfires. Recent U.S. wildfires have gained so much power that scientific models can no longer predict their behavior. A new paper urges the public to demand a correction in this trend by changing how forest fires are managed At a time when wildfires around the world are burning through records for intensity and size, several western U.S. ecologists argue that in many forests...
