Microsoft's Xbox 360 controller has dominated the PC gamepad market during this console generation. Now that we're nearing the launch of the new platforms, dedicated PC gamers are starting to worry about which gamepads will work going forward. This week, Microsoft officially confirmed that the Xbox One controller will work under Windows, but not until sometime in 2014. While this is positive news, it still leaves PC devotees wondering why Microsoft can't make it work on day one.

In a sad move that sacrifices the last vestiges of its creative vision, Microsoft has backed down on the Xbox One's mandatory Kinect. Despite its initially very vehement protestations about the importance of an always-on, always-watching, always-listening Kinect, Microsoft now says that the Xbox One will continue to work when Kinect isn't plugged in.

There's another video game console fight coming, and Microsoft's Xbox One has a hard act to follow as it joins the fray. The Xbox 360 has been outselling both the Nintendo and Sony consoles for some time now. I'm guessing Microsoft felt it had an unfair advantage, because it apparently has been doing its level best to scare gamers away from the Xbox One ever since it was announced.
