A man has been struck and killed on railroad tracks about 10 miles east of Vancouver. Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas says it happened at 2:43 a.m. Monday on the main Columbia River Gorge line, about 150 feet east of a crossing with gates and flashing lights at 164th Street.

Archaeologists in San Gabriel have uncovered an important piece of Southern California's history: the foundation to an ancient water distribution system that has laid buried a few feet beneath the surface of the old Union Pacific Railroad tracks for more than century. Alameda Corridor-East Construction Authority's lead archaeologist John Dietler said the feature, a series of stone-lined canals and reservoirs, is the missing piece of an important story behind the success of the San Gabriel Mission and ultimately, the springboard to the growth of Los Angeles.

Railroad track relocation approved in Fremont

Fremont officials this month unanimously approved a railroad track relocation agreement between the city and Union Pacific Railroad Co. to allow construction of the first phase of the Warm Springs west side access bridge and plaza project for the future Warm Springs-South Fremont Bay Area Rapid Transit station.

Local prosecutor gets railroad safety grant

Saline County Prosecuting Attorney Ken Casady recently received a $4,500 grant from Union Pacific Railroad. Casady's office applied for the grant through U.P. Cares safety program and the money will be used "in educating the public of dangers of trespassing on railroad property," Casady said.
