EU Parliament votes to phase out 'super' greenhouse gases
2014-03-13 03:39:10| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BusinessGreen: Efforts to ban businesses from using new refrigerators that emit harmful hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have taken a major step forward, after MEPs yesterday backed new legislation in the European Union. At a plenary session in Strasbourg, the EU Parliament voted through proposals to prohibit the use of HFCs in new equipment in a number of sectors, most notably commercial refrigeration and air conditioning, by 2022. The law would also impact new fire protection equipment, aerosols, and foams. HFCs...

EU parliament backs law to curb "super" greenhouse gases
2014-03-12 20:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: The European Parliament on Wednesday backed a law to curb the use of "super" greenhouse gases used in fridges and air conditioners, which have a global warming potential thousands of times greater than carbon dioxide. Lawmakers meeting in Strasbourg, France voted 644 to 19 in favour of a European Commission proposal to cut the use of climate-harming hydrofluorocarbons, known as HFCs or 'F-gases', by 79 percent below average 2009-2012 levels by 2030. "Today marks the beginning of the end for...

EU parliament exclude shale gas from tougher environmental code
2014-03-12 16:44:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: EU politicians on Wednesday voted for tougher rules on exposing the environmental impact of oil and conventional gas exploration, while excluding shale gas. Member states such as Britain and Poland are pushing hard for the development of shale gas, seen as one way to lessen dependence on Russian gas, as well as to lower energy costs as it has in the United States. The plenary vote of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France follows a compromise deal on the draft law in December, which...

EU Parliament approves tougher data protection regulation
2014-03-12 15:20:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The European Parliament has adopted a draft regulation preparing the way for stronger personal data protection in the EU. The text approved by the plenary session on first reading was identical to that passed by the Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs last October. The Parliament said in a statement that the aim was to consolidate the work so far on reforming data protection, so that the new Parliament taking office after elections in May does not need to start from scratch. The EU Council, which has the final say on the legislation, decided already last autumn that the data protection reform would not make it through the current parliamentary session and set a deadline of 2015 for passing the law. EU states have been divided on the law, as some like the UK fear the proposal creates an increased regulatory burden for businesses, especially those operating online and internationally, and other countries, such as Germany, want stronger protection for personal privacy. Designed to replace the existing data protection directive from 1995, the new law aims to give consumers greater control over how their personal data is used, especially online. It also extends EU regulations to businesses based outside the region and handling data on EU residents. Firms violating the rules would face fines up to EUR 100 million or 5 percent of annual turnover.
