Mattel Inc. has launched a new line of Barbie dolls with flexible ankles that will allow her to wear something besides high heels for the first time in more than five decades. El Segundo-based Mattel introduced Barbie in 1959 with her feet fixed in a permanent tip-toe position, but the toymaker has now come out with a version featuring a new "articulated ankle" that lets her wear shoes such as ballet flats, sandals and tennis shoes.
