Telecom Argentina announces ARS 210 mln fibre rollout
2015-01-21 15:14:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Argentine telecoms operator Telecom Argentina has announced that it will be investing around ARS 210 million in the deployment of a new fibre optic backbone network based on DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology. The company said the upgrade will be carried out by its provider Huawei and will eventually result in a tenfold increase to the current carrying capacity, substantially improving overall user experience and reliability, allowing customers throughout Argentina to connect at speeds of up to 100 Gbps. The operator said the first phase of the deployment between the cities of Buenos Aires, Rosario and Codoba will be finalised by the end of February, with a second phase seeing the new broadband network extended to the north and south of the country, including coastal areas and the mountainous Cuyo region.

Cuba denies previously reported WiFi rollout
2015-01-14 01:38:15| Wireless - Topix.net
Cuba will not begin offering wireless service despite reports of a planned WiFi rollout in its second-largest city, Santiago de Cuba, state-run telecommunications provider Etecsa said Tuesday. Cuba, where the Internet is largely limited to government offices and pricey pay-by-the-hour access at cafes and hotels, allows only some locals such as journalists, doctors and athletes to have Internet at home.
