On Feb. 26, South Africa reopened to U.S. pork. U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) Senior Vice President for Global Marketing Dan Halstrom says that although access to the market is still somewhat restricted, USMEF sees potential opportunities for U.S. pork cuts in South Africa’s meat processing and retail sectors. He explains that with South Africa also reopening to U.S. beef earlier this year, having both products eligible will add momentum to USMEF’s market development efforts. Depending on the region, buyers were after cattle for both graze-out winter wheat pasture and summer grass. Overall, demand is especially strong for calves and stocker cattle weighing 500-700 pounds, with the most demand for long-time weaned calves and light yearlings. Calves and yearlings traded mostly steady to $5 higher at auction, according to the Agricultural marketing Service (AMS). The full market advance was most evident for middleweight cattle weighing 500-700 pounds. Competition for these cattle has increased with cattle and grass interests becoming more prevalent. Although cash fed cattle trade was limited to Nebraska and Iowa-Minnesota through Friday afternoon, dressed prices were $4-$5 more than the previous week at $210 per cwt.
