Can Valve make the Steam Box affordable?

Back in January at CES 2013, the world got a good look at a prototype of Valve's upcoming Steam Box. The little cube PC, created by manufacturer Xi3, is essentially a PC gaming rig with modern specs, but aimed at the living room. However, as the pre-orders begin at $999, it seems unlikely that Valve can offer a powerful Steam Box at a console price.

Valve is gunning for the television with their Steam Box concept, and it isn't afraid of Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. Sure, those companies traditionally have had a hold on the gaming sphere, but that's a known quantity. The dark horse here is Apple, and Valve's managing director Gabe Newell is well aware that they're the company to worry about the most.

Valve confirms Linux Steam Box for 2013, but can it really disrupt PC and console gaming?

Only a few weeks ago, the so-called "Steam Box" was confirmed by Valve's managing director Gabe Newell as hardware designed to play well in the living room with big screen TVs. Now, more details are being given by Valve engineer Ben Krasnow. Unsurprisingly, this new machine will be running some variant of Linux, and will be unveiled publicly later in the year at a large gaming event like the Game Developers Conference or the Electronic Entertainment Expo.
